NOXIOUS WEEDS IN MONTANA

APPROXIMATELY NINE PERCENT OF MONTANA ACRES ARE INFESTED WITH NOXIOUS WEEDS

knapweedWeeds are common problems that all landowners face. The weeds that populate Montana are divided into two categories. Noxious and Problems weeds. Noxious weeds are those weeds that have been declared noxious by the state of Montana due to the fact that the plants have the ability to take over large parts and the state due to their highly invasive behavior. Typically, these weeds have been introduced into the state as a seed contaminant. Many of the noxious weeds that we have in the state were introduced from Europe or East Asia. When the immigrants traveled to America to settle a new land, they brought seed for agricultural production. Many times this seed contained other seeds from plants we currently classify as weeds. The plants were not a problem in the "home country" but the native plants of the great plains had a different growing pattern that made the new plants highly competitive or invasive.

This web site is designed to provide landowners with some basic weed information on Weeds and Pests. Use the menu on the left to select the appropriate topic.
