MONTANA RANGELANDS
RANGELAND IS THE LARGEST MONTANA CROP
 Rangelands in Montana are important to the economy of Montana since it provides forage for the beef cattle industry. In addition to providing forage for beef cattle, it is also home to many species of wildlife both large and small. In addition it provides the open space that we all enjoy. Rangelands can be both private and public lands. The grasses and forbs of Montana rangelands have evolved over the centuries by being grazed and burned.
Landowners must manage rangelands and avoid overgrazing. It is very important for all landowners to be aware of the management techniques of grazing rangelands. Although the grasses of the rangelands have evolved to be grazed, they cannot be grazed to many times during a growing season. Some range managers refer to too much grazing as one bite too many.
All landowners need to educate themselves on how to properly graze the range. This site is designed to assist in that education. In addition, the MSU Range Extension Program can further your education. The Extension Range Management program addresses range management issues facing Montana landowners. The goal of the program is to provide scientific, objective, and research based information that promotes an understanding of range management. The program is lead by Dr. Jeff Mosely.
