WILDLIFE CAN HAVE AN IMPACT ON RANCHLANDS

Montana is known widely for its abundance of wildlife. Much of this abundance is due to the open lands provided by the open space provided by ranch lands. There are all types of wildlife that exists on open space. Birds, predators, ruminants, and many species that make their living in the grass that is also used by domestic grazing animals.

Wildlife can have an impact on your pastures and harvested crops. It is estimated that 90% of the wildlife spent all or part of their life on private land. If you have large wildlife that frequent your property you need to manage your pasture appropriately. Large grazing wildlife can eat a portion of the grass. Landowners also need to protect harvested crops from large and small wildlife. Elk and deer can quickly destroy a haystack if the hay is not protected by fences or panels. It is very important to initiate this protection prior to the wildlife discovering the harvested crops. Once they start eating they are hard to deter.
