Motion by Nico Cantalupo to approve the report as read, second by Verlin Koenig. Motion passed unanimously.
Old Business
President Williams called for a report from the committee led by Rob Johnson to discuss the possibility of changing the organization name from “Montana Association of County Agricultural Agents” to something else. This discussion was initiated during recent amendments to the MACAA By-Laws. No formal committee action had occurred and the item was tabled by President Williams.
The MACAA is still committed to help Wyoming agents prepare and serve the Sunday dinner at the NACAA 2009 AM/PIC national meeting in Portland, OR (see new business).
Rene Kittle expressed her appreciation for NACAA’s $500 contribution to offset her expenses to participate in the 2008 JCEP conference.
New Business
President Williams called for NACAA standing committee reports. No reports.
John Halpop presented an update on the 2009 NACAA meal. The most recent plan is to prepare and serve beef, lamb and potatoes to approximately 1600 people. MACAA will be responsible for securing, preparing and serving about 500 pounds of beef and 750 pounds of potatoes. This undertaking will require 10 to 15 MACAA members attend the September 20-24, 2009 meetings in Portland.
Further discussion by Virginia Knerr and several members – many MACAA members should pay the minimum $40 into the NACAA Scholarship Fund by June 1, 2008 in order to be eligible to request scholarship assistance to attend the 2009 NACAA AM/PIC meetings in Portland.
John Halpop and Virginia Knerr announced that the 2008 Western Region “mini-AM/PIC” meetings will be held October 15-16 in Prineville, OR. This is an excellent opportunity for agents to formally present peer-reviewed posters or oral presentations about their programs.
Associate Director Jim Knight provided a brief administrative update on MSU Extension. He noted that MACAA faculty are doing some excellent programs that are eligible for many different NACAA or other award recognition. These are very useful for documenting program effectiveness in P/T and annual reviews. Jim indicated that all faculty should be aware of awards and encourage their counterparts to provide information for nominations.
Dr. Knight provided an update on Will Lanier, and on some discussions circulating about Extension’s level of involvement in “natural beef” and other new programs. Jim assured MACAA that our involvement will continue to be as educators, with no responsibility in promotion or enforcement of these new programs.
Dr. Knight also gave information about Dr. Bob Gough’s condition. Virginia Knerr circulated a card for everyone to sign for Bob.
Dr. Knight concluded his update with the priority items proposed by Dr. Steele for the 2009 Legislature: National security, community development and healthy communities.
John Halpop thanked Dr. Knight on behalf of MACAA for Extension’s support for agents to attend the spring agent update and Livestock Nutrition Conference.
Darren Crawford announced the “Triangle ag. agent update” will be May 20-21, 2008 at the Central Agricultural Research Center near Moccasin.
President Williams called for recent Proven Sire/Dam announcements:
- Grandfather Wayne Gipp (2) – Tasa (Portland) and Emerson (Austin)
- Grandfather Dan Picard – Brett
- Dad Damon Bunting – Bethany

Respectfully submitted,
