GrandCares utilizes the evidence-based education program, Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC) for Caregivers of Children with Special Health and Behavioral Needs, to give grandparents raising grandchildren the skills and tools needed to manage the stress of raising grandchildren.

This is NOT a support group, it is a strengths-based, educational workshop series that will enable grandparents and other kinship caregivers to:

  • Take Better Care of Themselves
  • Reduce Caregiver Stress
  • Communicate Effectively with Family and Professionals
  • Make Tough Decisions
  • Reduce Caregiver Guilt, Anger, and Depression
  • Set Goals and Problem Solve

Workshops take place for two hours, once a week, for six weeks, and are co-taught by professionals who are certified to teach the program by the national Powerful Tools for Caregivers organization. Workshop topics are:

  • Week One: Taking Care of You
  • Week Two: Identifying and Reducing Personal Stress
  • Week Three: Communicating Feelings, Needs and Concerns
  • Week Four: Communicating in Difficult Situations
  • Week Five: Learning From Our Emotions
  • Week Six: Mastering Caregiver Decisions

GrandCares is being offered in Montana through Montana State University Extension, Family & Human Development Program, as part of a pilot project with University of Hawaii and Colorado State University. Detailed pre- and post-tests are administered to gather data to further inform the program on both state and national levels. Current funding from The Brookdale Foundation and MSU College of EHHD allow for the program to be offered free of charge to participants.
