FCS in Cascade County

My position responds to local needs in the are of Family and Consumer Science, which includes Food and Nutrition, Family Economics, Family and Human Development and Housing and environmental Health.

I provide leadership and “hands-on” direction in planning, directing, implementing and evaluating the Cascade County’s Family and Consumer Sciences programs.  The scope of these individualized and group programs range from needs associated with nutrition, food preparation and safety, health and wellness issues to broader group and community needs associated with parenting, financial management, aging, housing, and environmental.

I prepare a monthly newsletter that contains education concerning current events and issues in the area of Family and Consumer Science.

Family and Consumer Classes and Clubs:

Cascade County Homemaker Clubs

  1. Cascade County has the largest number of Homemaker clubs in Montana.
  2. The clubs meet from September to May. Clubs offer education and leadership to all women in Cascade County. The Homemakers organize and lead the Cascade County Health fair; they work in many departments at the Montana State Fair.
  3. They attend educational meetings at the MSU Extension office, which allows the club members to meet and share fellowship and education. The Homemaker Clubs volunteer more than 6,000 hours to Cascade County. If you are interested in joining a Homemaker Club, please contact the Extension office, 454-6980.

Strong Women Stay Young

Staying physically active and being properly nourished is one of the most important things we can do to stay healthy for life. Essential to staying strong and vital is participation in regular strengthening exercises, which help to prevent osteoporosis and frailty by stimulating the growth of muscle and bone. 

Classes are held at the Great Falls Senior Center.

Sewing Days

The third Thursday of each month, from 9:00am - 12:00pm is sewing day at Extension. You can bring a project to sew or participate in the class for the month. Please call the Extension office to register for sewing day at 454-6980.

There are no fees for these classes. Participants provide all supplies and sewing equipment.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren or Relatives as Parents Program

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Relatives raising children are invited to classes the last Monday of the month, September – May. Classes address the challenges facing relatives raising children.  If you are raising a relative and need assistance, call the Extension office to have your name added to our invitation list.

Dinner and child care are provided. Classes are held on the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:00p.m. at the Skyline Education Center - 3300 3rd Street NE - Door #9. Contact Jona McNamee at 454-6980 with any questions.

 

Caregivers

Powerful Tools for Caregivers,
"Caring for the Caregiver"

An education program to provide family caregivers with the tools to increase their self-care and their care giving ability and confidence.  The program is conducted in two ½-hour sessions, once a week, over a six- week period. Each class incorporated several tools to build confidence and enhance communication skills. Participants give and receive needed support through discussions. Call the Extension office at 454-6980 or the Sletten Cancer Institute 731-8200 to sign up. There is a $50.00 fee for program materials. Scholarships are available.
